Our History

The evolution of Barangay Tablon

Early Roots

Community Settlement

Tablon's history is deeply integrated into the broader historical narrative of Cagayan de Oro City. Long before its transition into a modern economic hub, it began as a sparse, humble settlement of fishing and farming families along the city's eastern coast. The area originally derived its name from the Spanish word “tablon” (meaning a large plank of timber or log), owing to its early days as a strategic coastal site where massive logs harvested from the lush upper ridges were hauled and processed. Bounded naturally by the sea and surrounding hills, this peaceful coastal strip maintained a strong communal identity centered around its patron saint, Senior Santo Niño, setting a resilient foundation for the decades of growth to follow.

1970s - 1980s

Industrial Growth

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the barangay underwent a massive structural transformation, pivoting from a quiet, resource-based rural area into a primary industrial zone for Cagayan de Oro. Driven by strategic municipal zoning and its accessible highway location, the territory began attracting substantial local and national investments. Major manufacturing plants, agro-industrial facilities, and shipping enterprises established roots along the coast. This rapid commercialization completely shifted the local economy, generating thousands of new employment opportunities and driving an influx of workers from neighboring regions, which permanently altered Tablon's demographic landscape.

1984

Nestlé Factory Established

A definitive milestone in Tablon's history occurred in 1984 when Nestlé Philippines officially commenced operations on a massive 25.6-hectare site within the barangay. Marking a historic milestone as the company's very first manufacturing facility built outside the island of Luzon, the factory quickly became a premier engine of economic growth for Northern Mindanao. The establishment of this major hub not only provided stable livelihoods for generations of Tablon residents but also solidified the barangay's reputation as a vital cornerstone of the city's industrial sector and macro-economic stability.

Present

Urban Development

Today, Tablon effectively balances its identity as an industrial powerhouse with a strong focus on urban sustainability, residential expansion, and continuous community development. As the population grows to nearly 25,000 residents, the barangay local government continuously upgrades public infrastructure, health facilities, and educational institutions to meet modern demands. Through active community initiatives—ranging from environmental clean-up drives along the Umalag River to vibrant cultural celebrations and local youth leagues—Tablon stands as a progressive, multi-faceted urban center where economic productivity and neighborhood welfare thrive side by side.

A strategic and prime development hub in the east, managed through good governance, with an empowered citizenry, a competitive economy, and a sustainable, inclusive environment.
